Unless you plan to fish with a short line held in your hands, you are going to need a fishing reel to pull in any fish. The type of fishing reel you use will be determined by the type of fishing you are doing, but basically, there are three types. A casting reel, a spinning reel and a fly fishing reel. There may be several varieties of each type, but essentially that is it.
A casting reel, sometimes referred to as a bait casting reel, is an open-face reel designed for casting a heavy lure or bait into the water. They are also useful in trolling as well as pulling in larger fish. One of the problems with older casting type fishing reels is the potential for what is termed as back lash. If the cast is not made correctly, the reel could let more line out than necessary, get caught in the spinning reel and become wound backwards on the reel. A back lash tangle can be tricky and time consuming to fix.
A fly casting reel is considerably skinny by comparison, with a larger diameter and allows the casting of very lightweight fly fishing line as well as the fly, which almost seem weightless. A spinning fishing reel has a closed face and virtually eliminates the possibility of a back lash and are used for practically every type of fishing with the exception of fly fishing.

Casting reels, or bait casting reels are fairly simple to operate and usually when a person flips it back over their shoulder preparing to cast, their thumb is on the reel to prevent the fishing reel to allow the weighted bait to extend from the reel until the cast is made. Released too late and the bait usually slams into the water close to shore.
